Where It All Began

1889
Founded by William Schwartz. His son, William E. Schwartz, became the first in Canada to sell pure, high‑quality spices, setting a new standard for flavour.

1924
William H.C. Schwartz became President, leading rapid growth under the slogan “Say Schwartz and be Sure.”

1950s
The iconic Big “S” trademark was introduced, a symbol still recognised on shelves today.

1959
Schwartz entered the British market, expanding its reputation for quality beyond Canada.

1967
A joint venture between WH Schwartz & Sons and Jenks Brothers Foods formed Schwartz Spices UK Ltd.

1980
Schwartz became wholly owned by R. Paterson & Sons Ltd.

1984–Present
The Schwartz brand was acquired by McCormick & Company, a global leader in flavour and one of the world’s largest producers of herbs, spices and seasonings.

2012
Schwartz branding was refreshed across Europe.
